Tires

TiresTires

Old tires are worse than eyesores. Mosquitoes use them as breeding grounds and stockpiles of tires pose a fire hazard.

  • It's illegal to throw tires in the garbage or dump them along the roadside. Proper disposal is easy, thanks to tire dealers and many local recyclers.
  • Tires can be retreaded, recycled, and even shredded and used as fill in road construction.

Reduction Tips

Extend the life of your tires through proper maintenance such as inflation, balancing, and rotation. Repair leaky tires, tire stems, nail holes, and seals.

Reuse Tips

  • Tire Dealers - Local tire dealers recycle old tires. Most tire dealers will accept tires for a fee, even if you did not buy new tires from them. You can also return old tires when you buy new ones.
  • County drop-off facilities - Carver, Dakota and Hennepin County drop-off facilities accept car and truck tires (fees may apply). Generally, tractor and other tires larger than four feet in diameter are not accepted; call first.
  • Free Vouchers - City of Minneapolis Residents may obtain free vouchers to dispose of up to four tires annually. Call the City of Minneapolis Solid Waste and Recycling Division at 612-673-2917 to request a voucher.
  • Municipal clean-up events and collection centers may accept tires.
  • Garbage haulers - Some accept tires (fees may apply). Some landfills and transfer stations also accept tires for recycling. See below to find one near you.
