StyrofoamStyrofoam

Styrofoam® is popular. We see it used in cups, trays, and especially in packaging and packing materials. Although Styrofoam® container recycling isn't available in the Twin Cities today, there are some reuse options for packing peanuts.

Reuse TipsReuse Tips

Packing peanuts can be reused at home or given to local businesses. The Plastic Loose Fill Council can help you find a reuse option. The trade group's web site and Peanut Hotline provide a listing of local retailers that accept Styrofoam® packing peanuts for reuse.

  • Call the Peanut Hotline at 1-800-828-2214 or visit www.loosefillpackaging.com for the name and location of retailers that accept Styrofoam® packing peanuts for reuse.
  • Store packing peanuts in a dry plastic bag for reuse.

Disposal InformationDisposal Information

Distinguish between polystyrene and starch-based packing peanuts by testing samples in water. Starch-based packing peanuts dissolve in water, which is a good way to dispose of them if they cannot be reused.

Put non-reusable Styrofoam and polystyrene cups, trays, and packaging in the garbage; they cannot be recycled locally.

Other packing materials, such as bubble wrap and boxes, can also be reused. See Cardboard and Packaging for more information.
