Mattresses & Box Springs

Mattresses & Box SpringsMattresses & Box Springs

Mattresses and box springs are problematic in the waste stream because they are hard to move, clog up equipment and are nearly impossible to compact in a landfill. Over 80 percent of a mattress is recyclable. Before disposing of mattress sets in a landfill, try these reuse and NEW recycling options.

Reduction TipsReduction Tips

Prolong the life of your mattress following the manufacturer's instructions, generally by turning it four times a year. You'll notice sleeping benefits, too.

Reuse TipsReuse Tips

  • Buying a new set? Some retailers will take your old one.
  • Give your old set to a relative or friend. Consider donating, but be aware that very few charities accept mattresses unless they are in excellent condition.
  • Mattresses are commonly listed on the Twin Cities' Free Market, an online service for residents who want to give or get free reusable goods for the home, garage and garden.
