Manufacturer Recycling Options

Several manufacturers offer recycling services for electronics, most commonly for computer equipment. When considering the options, be sure to compare the fees and services offered.

Apple www.apple.com/environment/recycling/
Apple will accept any type of computer - Mac or a PC, working or nonworking - and will evaluate your computer to determine if it qualifies for reuse.  If it does, you will receive an Apple Gift Card for the value of your old computer which can be used for purchases at any Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. If your computer doesn't qualify for reuse, Apple will recycle it at no charge.

Apple also offers recycling for old ipods.  Bring your ipod into an Apple Retail Store and receive a 10 percent discount on the purchase of a new iPod.  You can also recycle your ipod by mail (mail in option does not qualify for 10 percent discount).

Canon offers recycling services for certain Canon products for a fee. You must provide the Canon model name and product serial number to order a pre-paid UPS shipping label to mail your items in for recycling.

Dell offers free recycling for all Dell electronic products.  Dell customers can also recycle their old PC, regardless of brand, at no cost when purchasing a new Dell computer. 

Dell also offers the opportunity to receive a 10% discount by donating your old computer system to the National Cristina Foundation, a non-profit organization that places used technology with local non-profit organizations and public agencies that serve disabled and economically disadvantaged children and adults across America. Epson offers recycling for EPSON brand computer equipment or peripherals for a fee through a mail in program. You'll also receive a coupon good for your next purchase at the Epson Store.

Gateway customers may be paid for used, working technology products through the trade-in program. First, Gateway provides you with a trade-in quote. Then you print a pre-paid shipping label and send in your item. Gateway also offers information about other recycling services for your used computer or electronics.

HP's Consumer Buyback and Planet Partners Recycling Program offers money in exchange for any brand of PC, monitor, printer, digital camera, or smartphone.  Users may get a free instant quote for their products online.  No purchase is required, however program users are responsible for postage when mailing in the item.  Users who are not eligible for the Buy Back program may submit products for recycling.

HP also offers free recycling for HP and Compaq branded products. Postage-paid shipping materials and instruction are available on the HP web site.  

Lexmark www.lexmark.com/recycle/
Lexmark offers a free collection program for all Lexmark printers and printing cartridges. Through the Equipment Collection Program, customers may return any end-of-life Lexmark branded products, and Lexmark will recycle the equipment for free. The consumer is responsible for all shipping costs.

Consumers can return up to five LG, Zenith or Goldstar branded televisions, monitors or other unwanted electronics to any one of 160 WM Recycle America drop-off points around the country, free-of-charge. Electronics from other manufacturers will be accepted for a fee at participating locations. Mobile phones, GPS units and personal digital assistants will not be accepted by the program, however these items are accepted for recycling by LG's separate electronics recycling program.

Most MRM drop-off sites accept all types and brands of consumer electronics for recycling. MRM sites accept Panasonic, Sharp and Toshiba brand TVs and consumer electronics such as VCRs and DVDs at no charge. There may be a charge for recycling other brands or products.

Free recycling for all Samsung-branded consumer electronics, like televisions, monitors, DVD players, home theater systems, cameras, camcorders, printers, and peripheral.

In Minnesota, consumers can recycle Sony-brand electronics and personal-computer equipment at several Waste Management, Inc. sites free of charge.
