West Side Citizens Organization

In 2011-12, WSCO staff will work to cultivate a green culture among new immigrant communities and low-income renter households at three multi-family housing sites on St. Paul's west side. Working with resident leadership and site managers, the project targest action, education, sustainability around recycling, waste and toxicity reduction and composting to approximately 1,000 individuals.

In 2009, West Side Citizens Organization staff (WSCO) spent considerable time working to spread the word about the benefits of waste reduction though community events, workshops and one-to-one outreach. The organization was able to reach hundreds of residents at two major events in the community, including Cinco de Mayo, and at a number of National Night Out events, including the one held at Neighborhood House with over 300 attendees. WSCO also had a table at two “Movies in the Park” events held in the summer. In addition to events, WSCO staff went door-to-door passing on informational handouts, promoting RethinkRecycling.com, and recruiting for workshops. Overall, it is estimated that approximately 600 residents were reached through our efforts.
