St. Anthony Park Block Nurse Program

SAPBNP posted waste reduction information in two columns in its community newspaper and posted flyers in neighborhood locations about their new focus on waste reduction. In response, 500 people took waste or toxicity reduction actions. 259 seniors requested and received a canvas shopping bag to replace paper bags. 91 people requested assistance to get off junk mail lists. 51 people exchanged mercury for digital thermometers. The SAPBNP housecleaning staff began using cloth rags (rather than paper towels) and non-toxic cleaning products in 30 seniors’ homes that are served by the program. 65 additional people received cloth rags and non-toxic cleaning supplies as prize incentives. SAPBNP also sponsored six group outings for seniors to visit local thrift/reuse stores, and helped coordinate 26 rummage sales to promote buying used first. A new brochure on waste and toxicity reduction was placed in 1000 outreach folders that are given to people who inquire about SAPBNP’s home health services.
