Salem Lutheran School
The entire school (174 students plus 16 staff) received comprehensive information about reduction, reuse and recycling. All classrooms participated in composting of school and classroom organics (lunches and snacks) through backyard composting and vermicomposting. The school now has a compost system that includes an outdoor bin and two indoor vermicompost bins. 350 pounds of compostable waste was diverted from school lunches. A Master Gardener provided training to 100 school families on backyard composting. Children and families were educated about reusable containers for the snacks they send to school, and 70% of the students used reusable containers for a three-week pilot. Surveys of families show many have increased how frequently they use reusable containers. Information was shared with 20 other school or church decision makers in the Stillwater area. The school plans to continue composting lunchroom scraps and two classrooms plan to continue maintaining their vermicompost bins.
