Riverview Specialty School
Students helped create Family Education folders focused on waste reduction themes, which were sent home monthly to over 300 families. Students visited the Hennepin County Transfer and Reuse Station, and then wrote an article about their visit, which was published in the school newsletter. Students weighed lunch food waste by grade level, and graphed and displayed the data in the cafeteria. They began composting fruit and vegetable waste for the school gardens. Students created 24 posters on waste reduction actions people can take, which were posted in businesses near the school. Over 400 students and 30 staff viewed the Heart of the Beast’s “Beyond the Trash Can” play.
