Minneapolis Highrise Residents Council

The MHRC is the citywide public housing highrise tenant organization in Minneapolis representing 5000 households in 39 highrises. MHRC conducted activities including household hazardous waste disposal workshops for 100 residents, mailing 260 reduce junk mail postcards on behalf of residents who completed them, encouraging 100 residents to "opt-out" of credit card solicitations, and helping 11 highrise buildings establish "swap days" or give-away tables to exchange unwanted items. MHRC staff are working with Hennepin County to include door-to-door outreach to 800 highrise residents advertising the county's HHW disposal days, and have started planning for improved recycling in the highrises as an outgrowth of this project.
MHRC produced fliers in English and Somali regarding these activities and published articles on the project in its newsletter, the Highrise Lowdown, delivered to 5,000 households each month.
The "swap days" were received well by residents and will be repeated each year. MHRC added an improved recycling component to their project and will continue to work on those systems in the highrises in years to come.
