Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association
HNIA, in collaboration with the Eastside Food Co-op, hosted a waste reduction information booth at the neighborhood farmers market every Saturday for 20 weeks. Each week, volunteers and professionals educated shoppers on issues such as junk mail reduction, HHW disposal, composting, etc., and challenged shoppers to take a waste reduction quiz to receive a free canvas bag. Shoppers could also sign a written pledge to reduce waste, which was mailed to them later as a reminder. 200 people completed the quiz and signed the pledge, and over 400 junk mail postcards were completed. Articles on junk mail reduction, composting, holiday waste reduction, etc. were featured in several issues of The Hollander neighborhood newspaper (to 4,000 residents) and Eastside Food Co-op News (600 members) during the year. It is estimated 1,000 people visited the waste reduction booth at the farmers market in 2002.
