Harvest Moon Community Farm
Waste reduction activities were integrated into Harvest Moon's summer camps and after-school programs, including Create & Cultivate Farm and Art Camps and Grandparent/Grandchild Farm Camp. 201 children, teens and grandparents participated.
Harvest Moon staff researched and wrote lesson plans on backyard composting, reuse projects, and alternatives to toxic household products. Children, and in some cases their grandparents, who attend the summer camps engaged in hands-on, creative projects to learn about these issues. Various activity bins were created to engage children in activities such composting and building bird feeders and other items from reused materials. These projects were implemented and tested to determine which activities were most popular and effective. Children and parents were also challenged to find ways to reduce waste at home and make effective use of items otherwise headed for the garbage.
