Hands On Twin Cities
During their 2007 project, eleven nonprofit affiliates of HandsOn participated in the project, including Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Services, North Minneapolis Meals on Wheels, and other organizations serving home bound senior citizens. HandsOn staff prepared a friendly visitor packet and trained staff and volunteers at the affiliate organizations to complete home visits with seniors. The friendly visitors shared important waste and toxicity reduction information with seniors, such as how to read labels on household products and how to properly dispose of pharmaceutical waste and household hazardous waste. 946 friendly visitor packets were distributed. HandsOn also advertised the project through their e-newsletter (sent to 5,000 people), their website, and the Volunteer Expo at Mall of America. Affiliates shared the feedback that “this project reached people who would have never received this information otherwise.” HandsOn will continue offering the information to their affiliate organizations in the future.
As a returning grantee in 2008, Hands On Twin Cities developed and provided a waste reduction educational Power Point and interactive training session called "It's Easy Being Green: Simple Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Practices" to their staff and to 175 affiliate organizational partners through six workshops reaching 890 people including events at Travelers, Century College and the 2020 event at the Mall of America. They also developed an online training quiz with simple Reduce, Reuse Recycle tips included that was followed up with each participant and additionally promoted to 6,000 additional people.
