District 1 Community Council
This neighborhood council serving residents in the Battle Creek (southeast) neighborhoods in St. Paul launched a year long campaign called “A Place For Waste.” Each month, a full page of the neighborhood newspaper (circulation 11,400) was dedicated to waste and toxicity reduction issues. The Green Guardian logo was featured each month on the cover of the newspaper and the inside page. Topics covered included composting, junk mail, disposal of electronics, HHW, waste free holidays, recycling, and automotive waste. Community events throughout the year reinforced waste education. Seventy junk mail postcards were completed at the fall ice cream social. A Junk Swap was added to the annual clean up event, at which 125 discarded items were taken. Three and half fewer tons of materials were hauled away at this year’s clean up compared with last year’s. This is an outcome the organizers attribute in large part to the Junk Swap and the waste reduction campaign. Over 100 people received information at three other community events. The Junk Swap will be continued at future neighborhood clean-ups.
