CNHS incorporated household hazardous waste education into the first chapter of materials used in their first time homeowner classes. The materials were shared in classes that are offered in English, Spanish and Hmong. During the grant year, classes were presented to 483 people including – 22 English classes, 19 Spanish classes and 12 Hmong classes. Follow up surveys and phone calls showed that due to their participation in the class, 75% have checked their homes for hazardous products and disposed of them properly, 50% now read product labels, and 50% now recycle more than they used to. CNHS also promoted waste reduction information in their newsletters. They plan to continue the household hazardous waste education in their first time homeowner classes.
In 2010, for the Home Buyer Education workshops, CNHS staff integrated a presentation on the benefits of recycling, recipes for non-toxic cleaners and weed killers, savings benefit of purchasing products in bulk and recycling site information for Ramsey County. To accommodate the new recycling curriculum, 30 minutes of training time was added to workshops. Workshops were offered two to four times monthly during the grant period. The counseling staff incorporated training, fact sheets and a pre-survey into other CNHS programs including pre-purchase and foreclosure counseling and home improvement and down payment assistance loans. On their website, they added a recycling survey for clients.
