ArtStart/ArtScraps
ArtStart's "ArtScraps" store added several programs to encourage children, teachers and shoppers to reduce waste and reuse waste items creatively in art projects. 30 teachers and over 200 children learned about waste and toxicity reduction through art projects coordinated by ArtStart. ArtStart hosted an open house for 30 teachers and daycare providers at their ArtScraps reuse store, highlighting artistic projects that can be done with discarded materials. Teachers also learned how to reduce the purchase of and improper disposal of toxic art materials. After the open house, 20 teachers signed up for a field trip to the store. An artist facilitates the fieldtrip where children are taught five waste reduction ideas through a hands-on activity. New signs were added to the store to encourage shoppers to consider waste reduction and reuse. A scale was added to measure the amount of reuse materials kept out of landfills. The ScrapMobile -- a portable art van -- made stops in Lyndale, Seward and Frogtown neighborhoods to engage youth in creative projects with a waste reduction message.
