ArtReach Alliance & Crosswinds Middle School
This project engaged over 100 students in 9th and 10th grade at Crosswinds Middle School in Woodbury. Teachers in five different disciplines collaborated to reinforce waste reduction messages across subjects. Students learned about packaging and waste issues in art, theater, Spanish, math, science, and health. They created an original play about reduce, reuse, recycle; created art projects using 50% - 100% recycled materials; compared America’s use of consumer goods and landfills with other parts of the world; and created new garments from used clothing. The plays and art materials were presented at the school’s Culture Fest/Earth Day Celebration and at the Living Green Expo. The school’s principal reported younger students have asked, “Do we get to do that in the 9th grade?” and the answer is yes. Materials purchased for the project are part of the school’s Media Center for on-going use, and the 9th grade curriculum that was written and used for the project will be repeated.
