Arc of Greater Twin Cities
This organization serves people with developmental disabilities and their families, in part through Arc’s Value Village thrift stores. Through Arc's first grant in 2005, 275 volunteers and staff were trained to become “messengers” for waste reduction and recycling issues to Value Village customers. 115 customers attended in-store quarterly workshops on less-toxic household products, reusing during the holidays, reusing wool in felting projects, or composting food waste. Over 3000 junk mail postcards were given to customers and residents to complete. Significant advertising and media outreach took place with this project, including advertisements in Sun Newspapers featuring the Green Guardian logo sent to over 340,000 people five times during the year.
Arc's second grant educated young parents, adults with disabilities, and professionals through small group presentations. Twenty-one presentations were made, reaching 383 people. Participants completed a survey and commitment card at the event, and received a phone call several weeks later to check on their progress. 86% of those reached reported completing one or more waste reduction actions since the presentation. An additional 611 people were reached through presentations at 14 community fairs. 5,000 people received a monthly e-newsletter for seven months with information about seasonal waste reduction topics. Due to the success of the project and interest from parents, Arc will continue the project using their own funds and has already scheduled additional presentations for fall of 2008 and 2009.
