Anoka County Community Action Program
In 2010, ACCAP's Child Care Resource & Referral and Healthy Start program educated young pre-school children and their caregivers in both Anoka and Washington Counties. To address young children's health, they taught unlicensed caregivers and parents about reduction of toxicity, waste reduction and methods of recycling. Because young children need concrete activities to support their learning experiences, education was delivered through hands on activities in the ongoing Play & Learn Groups. In addition, staff reached unlicensed caregivers through support groups events, newsletter articles, and special events.
In 2003, ACCAP’s Senior Outreach program staff shared information on alternatives/proper disposal of household hazardous products, junk mail solutions, shopping used first, and recycling with low-income seniors and disabled adults in Anoka County. Packets of information were given to 700 households during home visits or through contact with clients at senior centers. County staff also provided training to the coordinators of the HandyWorks Program and the Senior Information Line so those programs can share similar information with their clients.
