African Refugee Support Services

This project developed Somali language educational literature on waste/toxicity reduction and recycling. 39 Somali high school students were trained as waste and toxicity reduction community educators as part of a student leadership program. In turn, each student spent 30 hours giving waste reduction information to Somali families in their apartment buildings and distributing translated educational literature. Workshops on waste/toxicity reduction were also conducted in low income apartment buildings with 68 Somali women. A full-page notice regarding waste and toxicity reduction was translated and published in the Somali language monthly newspaper Warsan, with a readership of 10,000. African Refugee Support Services is an active member of a coalition of 50 immigrant organizations (the New American Collaborative) and presented information on waste reduction activities to leaders of those organizations.
