Disposal InformationDisposal Information

Smoke detectors are available in two types. One type, using ionization chambers that contain radioactive materials, should not be placed in the trash. For disposal options, contact the manufacturer or businesses listed under the directory for Hazardous Waste Brokers, Transporters and Disposal Facilities. The second variety uses photoelectric cells to detect smoke; it may be safely disposed of in the trash. Before disposal, verify the type by checking the detector's operating manual or contacting its manufacturer.
