Packaging Solutions Group is a package engineering and development firm that helps companies create a competitive advantage in the marketplace. PSG analyzes packaging costs throughout a company's supply chain and creates package designs that add savings to a company's bottom line. PSG's goal is to help clients accomplish more, with less cost.

Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Packaging Solutions Group does not sell packaging materials, equipment or products. Because PSG is not motivated by the sale of packaging materials and accessories, the firm develops unbiased, cutting edge packaging solutions for its clients. Using state of the art modeling and package optimization software, PSG creates packaging solutions that ensure product protection using the least amount of packaging at the most affordable price.

PSG Reusables
Packaging Solutions Group works closely with clients to develop a variety of reusable transport packaging solutions made of a variety of materials such as wood crates, steel racks and crates, plastic totes and corrugated plastic systems. PSG's approach is to focus on the feasibility of using and the potential economic benefits of a reusable transport packaging system and the design capabilities to create a "best fit" reusable system for the client.

Reusable Steel Crates Replace
Corrugated & Wood Pallets

Packaging Solutions Group worked intimately with a Minneapolis-based refrigeration manufacturing company to design a reusable steel shipping crate for its heat exchange coils. The goals of the project were to reduce the high cost of purchasing one-time-use corrugated packaging and wood pallets, to reduce the disposal costs of the packaging and to reduce the excessive amount of corrugated dunnage used. This was accomplished by replacing the corrugated packaging and wood pallets with a reusable steel crate system.

About the Reusable Steel Crate
The reusable crate is approximately 54" L x 44" W x 52" H and manufactured from tubular steel. The reusable crate features corner uprights that collapse when the crate is empty for easy loading and unloading of heat exchange coils. The crate is designed to accommodate several different sizes of coils.

How the Reusable System Works
The refrigeration company uses the reusable steel crates in a closed loop manufacturing distribution system. Heat exchange coils manufactured in Mexico are shipped on reusable crates to an assembly plant in Puerto Rico where the coils are used to manufacture refrigeration units. In Puerto Rico, empty crates are collapsed and stacked for the return trip to Mexico where the reusable system starts over again.

Impacts of the Reusable System
By eliminating the labor intensive corrugated shipping system, the coil manufacturer in Mexico decreased the amount of time required to pack the coils for shipment to Puerto Rico. The shipping density of the heat exchange coils increased by 40 percent which decreased the number of shipments made to Puerto Rico and lowered outbound shipping costs.

In Puerto Rico, the reusable crate reduced the disposal costs of corrugated packaging by 90 percent. The cost of returning empty crates to the coil manufacturer in Mexico is minimized by a 5 : 1 return ratio. For every five shipments of outbound coils to Puerto Rico, only one return shipment of empty crates is required to return to Mexico.

Overall, these cost reductions more than cover the critical cost of returning empty crates from the assembly plant in Puerto Rico to the coil manufacturer in Mexico.
