New Compostable Bag Requirements Now in Effect

Posted March 12th, 2010 by Rethink Recycling
This new requirement affects those of you in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin (excluding the City of Minneapolis), Ramsey, Scott, and Washington who have your yard waste picked up by a hauler at your curbside. (This is not a new requirement for Dakota County; they've been requiring compostable bags for years.)

There is a new Minnesota law (HF403/SF383) that requires metropolitan area residents to put their yard waste out in compostable bags rather than the standard black plastic bags. You can choose between compostable plastics (which is what most of the conversation is about) or paper kraft bags, or you can check with your city or your yard waste hauler to see if you can get a yard cart.

We've posted a lot of information on a new page of our website at www.RethinkRecycling.com/compostablebags. You can find information on who it affects and how, why it's a good thing for us and our environment, what to look for when buying these new bags, and what other options you have if you prefer not to purchase these bags.

If you read through that information and still have questions, please ask here on our blog!

Paper kraft bags

I've been using the paper bags for years. I like that they stand upright when I'm trying to fill them with leaves and weeds. But I also use my compost bin for a lot of yard waste. We just started the bin last summer so I'm eager to see how things look in the bin this spring!
