America Recycles Day is Coming Soon!

America Recycles Day is Coming Soon!
Posted November 9th, 2009 by Rethink Recycling
Happy America Recycles Day! America Recycles Day is Sunday, November 15. It's an important time for us to celebrate the work we all do to recycle the materials we use. Minnesota recycles over two million tons of waste annually-the second best rate in the country! Besides the environmental impact, that has also created over 19,000 Minnesota jobs that are involved with recycling.

America Recycles Day is also a day to stop for a moment to consider a commitment to doing more. Even at the second-best rate in the country, Minnesotans could recycle much more. About one third of the waste we generate at home could have been recycled in curbside programs. So whether you are a dedicated recycler, or new to the recycling game, take some time to consider a commitment to do more. Ask yourself these questions:

• Do I recycle all I can at curbside? If you're not sure, explore our site to learn what things that can and can't be recycled.

• Do you recycle old cell phones, VCRs, and other electronic equipment? It is against Minnesota law to put them in the garbage, so if you're not sure where to recycle them, visit our electronics pages to learn how.

• What about in the bathroom, laundry room, home office--do you have a receptacle there to collect toothpaste boxes, laundry detergent bottles, and office paper?

There is so much we all can do, and we should be doing all we can. Our efforts now to recycle everything we're able to will ensure a healthier environment, better water supply, and more health and wealth for all of us and future generations. Some of the benefits we see now, that will only continue to increase:

• Saving natural resources - Recycling one ton of paper saves 7,000 gallons of water.

• Reducing greenhouse gases - Recycling in Minnesota reduces emissions equal to taking 2.3 million cars off the road.

• Creating jobs - As we mentioned, over 19,000 jobs have already been created in the recycling industry in Minnesota.

• Reducing our taxes - Each year, the recycling industry contributes over $64 million in taxes, which help pay for our public services.

If you're not sure about what else you can commit to for America Recycles Day, explore RethinkRecycling.com for ideas. Once you have your America Recycles Day Resolution we welcome you to share your commitments and ideas below for others to read and consider. Have a happy, healthful, and thoughtful America Recycles Day!

Recycling in the Bathroom

Thanks for the recycling tips. I hadn't really thought about all the products for recycling from my bathroom - toothpaste boxes to shampoo and conditioner bottles. I have added a second trash can in my bathroom to start collecting recycling. Now it will be just as easy to recycle as it is to throw away.

Recycling in the kids area

You can even recycle when it comes to the kids bringing home sheets of homework. Instead of using extra sheets for showing the work in math, have them use the back side to show the work. In the town I live in, there's an "unoffical contest" to see if each household can increase the amount of recycled material to an extra 8 pounds.

Computer area

Put an extra bag or bin by the computer printer and recycle all the excess paper that gets printed. Be sure to turn the paper over and have the printer print on the back sides of all paper. Lots of paper that comes home from school can be reused in the printer for home use.

Recycle receipts (or opt out!)

I recently read how many trees are consumed each year simply for the printing of receipts. The number was astounding (and sad). In most cases, like at the gas pump or when I’m stopping for a bite to eat, I never save the receipt anyway. It’s immediately trash. What a waste! Now I’ve started opting out of receipts whenever I can. When I can’t opt out, I put unneeded receipts in the side door compartment of my car and periodically grab them on my way into the house or work to drop in the recycling bin.
