The Second “R”: Reuse
We were just reminded (via our Facebook page--thanks fans!) that Hennepin County has just released this year's Choose To Reuse coupon books. These books are free and offer special deals at local retailers in and around Hennepin County to promote reuse and easy reuse opportunities. (You can download Hennepin's Choose To Reuse book here; the coupons are valid October 1-November 30, 2009, so act fast!)
So, in honor of Hennepin County's release of the Choose To Reuse book we thought we'd take a minute to share some of our own "reuse" tips. You should always consider whether you can repair, sell, or donate usable household goods before throwing or recycling them. Of course recycling is great, but if there is a way to reuse first it can save money, use less resources than recycling, and often supports our local economy (reuse operations tend to be owned and run locally).
Once you've decided to sell or donate something it's sometimes a challenge to find a person or place that wants your used stuff. Besides websites like E-bay and craigslist where you could sell your items, you may also have opportunities through other organizations like ARC's Value Village or the Salvation Army. These organizations that accept donations often list specific items that they do or do not accept. Here are links to information provided by our county partners. Select the link for your county to find options near you.
Anoka County Community Action Program
Carver and Dakota Counties' CAP Agency
Hennepin County's Choose to Reuse Directory
Ramsey and Washington Counties' Community Action Partnership
Another great tool is the Twin Cities Free Market-it's like craigslist, but all free and all local!
We also have a page on RethinkRecycling.com that lists places that accept donations. Check out the organizations listed, then click the link to their site or give them a call to see if they'll take your used goods.
That's what a snapshot of we've got-what other places or resources do you all have to share with us regarding donations and reuse?

Additional Resources for Re-Using
Here are a few other resources:
Anoka County has information about where to get your household items repaired so you can keep using them or donate them.
Anoka County's similar list for places you can donate to.
Ramsey County produces a Second-Hand Store Directory to help you find places to buy used in Ramsey County.
And Dakota County has their listing of where to buy used in Dakota County.
Enjoy!
